The Coast Guard is the principal agency for enforcement of provisions of all national enactment in force in the maritime zones of Somaliland and provides following services to the Nation and marine community.
Ensuring safety and protection of the islands, offshore installations and other structure in our maritime zones.
Providing protection to fishermen and assistance to them at sea while in distress.
Preservation and protection of our maritime environment including prevention and control of maritime pollution.
Assistance to the Department of Custom and other authorities in anti-smuggling operations.
Enforcement of MZI Acts.
Initiating measures for the safety of life and property at sea.

and there are three main sector bases of Somaliland coastguard along the coastile and the head quarter in Hargeisa capital city of somaliland.

Prioritised Coast Guard Functions
A ‘Coast Guard Function’ can be defined as an expression of a State’s competence whilst carrying out maritime surveillance activities such as Border Control, Maritime Safety and Security, Maritime Customs activities, Fisheries control, Maritime Environment Protection and General Law Enforcement.
The training for the Coast Guard will initially focus on the defined ‘Prioritised’ Coast Guard Functions; these are:

- Conduct and/or provide support to Search and Rescue (SAR) Operations

- Conduct and/or provide support to Search and Rescue (SAR) Operations
